Agroforestree database

This database provides detailed information on a total of 670 agroforestry tree species. It is intended to help field workers and researchers in selecting appropriate species for agroforestry systems and technologies.

For each species, the database includes information on identity, ecology and distribution, propagation and management, functional uses, pests and diseases and a bibliography.

This project has been funded by the British Department for International Development (DFID, the European Union and the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF).

Arbutus unedoSeeds can be stored under cold stratification for up to 6 weeks. The fleshy coating on seeds should be removed before storage. Stored seed should be soaked for 5-6 days in warm water and then surface sown in a shady position in a greenhouse without allowing the compost to become dry. The seed usually germinates in 2-3 months at 20°C. Seedlings are prone to damping off, they are best transplanted to individual pots as soon as they are large enough to handle and should be kept well ventilated. Seedlings should be grown in a greenhouse for their first winter planted out in late spring after the last expected frosts. Root disturbance should be avoided and seedlings are best placed in their final positions whilst young.
Asimina trilobaSeeds should not be allowed to freeze or dry out, because this can destroy the immature, dormant embryo. To break dormancy Pawpaw seed must receive 90-120 day stratification, i.e. exposure to cold temperatures. To accomplish this, the seed should be placed in plastic freezer zipper bag containing a handful of moist sphagnum moss and refrigerated at 0° - 4° C. The over wintering of field planted seeds normally accomplishes this stratification requirement.
Diospyros virginianaSeeds should be kept for 2-3 months at 10º C under moist conditions then soaked for 2-3 days before planting in shallow drills in light soils with plenty of humus and covered to a depth of about 13 mm; or may be planted in the fall and permitted to stratify naturally in the ground over winter. Germination should be in 1-6 months. The seed bed should be mulched. Seedlings should be planted out in early summer and given some protection from winter cold for their first winter or two outdoors.
